Hilltop Workteam Day Five (Sunday)

Here is the post from Chris that we metioned yesterday: Saturday, February 6
Today we woke up to the smell of French toast. Steve, Mike and Michelle were up early cooking us a good breakfast of French toast, eggs and cantaloupe. We were up early and ready to work! The weather was beautiful as we rode out to the new land site. We learned how to mix sand, cement and water to make mortar to fill the cracks in two big walls around the perimeter of the Living Hope Community, the future site of the new Esperanza Viva. We spent most of the day working in pairs filling the cracks and smoothing them out. Chris and Michelle thought they had their system perfected until Jim came over to tell us to look at Gene and Susan’s wall to see how it should be done!
After our work on the land was finished we went back to the orphanage to play with the kids. They didn’t seem to mind that we were in our work clothes with dirt and cement all over us.
The kids presented us with a program to thank us for coming. They did skits of the Bible stories of Jonah and Noah and the girls performed a dance routine that they had rehearsed. They all did very well and it was evident that they practiced very hard to perform for us. We really enjoyed it. We found out Gene is even better at “the doughnut game” than he is at cards! He was the first to eat a whole doughnut hanging by a string in a contest. Such hidden talents we never knew about. Before the day was done, a few of us chose a child to sponsor and felt really good about the commitment we had made. Short trips to the Internet café and the ice cream shop rounded out our evening.
Tomorrow brings church in the morning and a sight-seeing trip to an excavated Mayan pyramid and an ancient catholic church. Stay tuned to the blog site for more pics and details for the trip!

This post is from today:
Sunday, February 7
Today was a beautiful day. We went to church and listened to a message by Jerry McNally. The music was fantastic with drums, electric and acoustic guitars, violin and congas. They put the words up on the screen so that we were able to sing along. An interpreter gave us Jerry’s message while we watched him in a side room.
After church we went to Cholula to see the church called La Iglesia de los Remedios built on top of the Great Pyramid of Cholula.  We took lots of pictures with beautiful views on the background. We walked past many vendors and went into numerous shops buying souvenirs and enjoying the weather.
To end our day we ate at a wonderful restaurant and watched fútbol Americana as we ate.
Neither the Saints nor the Colts seemed quite as important as what we have been doing for the past week.
Soon we’ll be home and our lives will have been enriched by the week we have spent here. We will present the highlights of our week at Sunday school on Sunday. See you then!
