Kettle Brook Church Day Four (Friday)

Thoughts from James from yesterday:
When we went to bed today, we were all exhausted. It was an extremely long day. We started out our day by eating breakfast - eggs made by Sue and getting ready for the day ahead of us. The eggs were delicious. It was now time for daily devotions. The leader for today was Sue. Sue decided to use the passage Romans 12:6-13 to lead us in a talk about the spiritual gifts God has given us and how we use these gifts. After we prayed and finished our devotions we were off to the work site where we were in for a hard day’s work. The men especially did a lot of work today because they mixed cement on the ground by hand, and they had to take wheel barrels full of the mixed cement. The women and girls had the job of taking out all the stones found in the piles of dirt where the cement was to be laid. Luke had the extremely tiring task of hauling the wheel barrels full of dirt from about 5 acres away to where the cement was going to be mixed. James sat around all day and read magazines, but he couldn’t do anything due to the fact he is on crutches and can’t walk on his foot. He did feel bad about not working though, he would rather have been working than being a spectator, and he liked to call himself “perezoso,” the Spanish word for lazy. After the tiring few hours of work, we all piled into the bus and went over the orphanage. Once we got there, we looked through Esperanza Viva’s store, which was open for us, the first time on our trip. They had some really neat things and we capitalized on these unique things. Sue got some jewelry, while the Neuburgs got a few things for themselves. Once we were done shopping, it was time for lunch. The lunch was chicken meatballs with rice and bread on the side. After we had our fill it was time for an afternoon full of activities with the kids. Some of the activities we did included playing dodgeball, doing the girls hair and dancing. Dancing was a very big hit with the kids. Anna and Luke put on a show for them, until the kids got comfortable enough to come up and dance themselves. Some of the girls danced with Luke while some the boys tried gymnastics moves they had seen. At about 5PM, to our groups dismay, we had to gather our things and go back to the guest house. We reached the guest house at about 5:20PM and we had to get ready for our devotions at 7:00PM. We did so by eating a fantastic dinner of ranch chicken wraps made by Kristie, Kim and Sue. When we had had enough to eat, it was time for our devotions. We had a woman come in from the orphanage to tell us her story. She could only speak Spanish, so she had another lady from the orphanage come to translate for her. Her story was touching. After devotions, it was time for our team’s daily meeting. We talked about the daily events and our plans for tomorrow. We also talked about what we had seen in a staff member that day that we hadn’t seen before. Finally it was over and we were all ready for bed. We finished our last minute things and went to bed.
