“God is building a home. He’s using all of us—irrespective of how we got here—in what He is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now He’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together.” —Ephesians 2:19-21, The Message Bible
We got on the plane with only a vague idea of what to expect. Now that we’re finally here, we can see how we fit into the vision God has given to the staff here for a community where kids can grow, be loved, and know that God has a place for them in His plan.
With over 90 kids to interact with and a language barrier, it can be overwhelming and frustrating at times—but we learn more every day and are figuring out ways of connecting that don’t require long conversations. The kids are eager to play sports and other games with us and show their creativity through crafts and drawing.
The surroundings are both sobering and amazing. We’re struck by the lack of infrastructure and the obstacles that creates—but amazed by the majestic views of the local friendly semi-active volcano “Popo”.
Most of all, we’re finding opportunities to grow closer as a team, by living in the same space, planning activities for the kids, doing daily devotions, sharing a time of worship and prayer with the staff, and working together digging and building an extended retaining wall on the property. What seemed like an impossible task at first became doable as we worked in conjunction with another team visiting from Wisconsin. We look forward to more opportunities in the second half of the week!
